Less Than 50 in the Wild
This creative series is engendered by the alarming report of fewer than 50 remaining Sumatran rhinos in the wild, a catastrophic decline from earlier estimates. While historically most rhino losses are from poaching, the recent Sumatran rhino decimation is primarily caused by habitat loss due to the rapid increase of unsustainable palm oil production. This is also true for the dramatic population decline of Sumatran elephants, tigers, and orangutans, among other endangered wildlife of Southeast Asia.
Although the recent explosion in palm oil production has had a devastating environmental impact, it is only one of many drivers of deforestation globally. It is estimated that around 50,000 acres of forest are cleared every day worldwide to produce commodity crops, including beef, soy, palm oil, sugarcane, cocoa, coffee, timber, pulp, and paper.
This creative series's goals include serving as an awareness campaign that highlights the links between thoughtless overconsumption, habitat loss, and animal extinction. Additionally, the artworks are to be sold at charity exhibitions, with all proceeds going to non-profit organizations that fight deforestation and promote animal advocacy.
